“In the morning we went to the flea market and Bob bought this puppet. Every time one of the journalists asked him a question, he put his ear to the puppet’s mouth and pretended to listen to the answer. Then he would tell the press. It drove them nuts. They didn’t understand him.” -Barry Feinstein

A two-part post - measuring time.
Exhibit A: James Gang, 1971.
Exhibit B: Nirvana, 1992.
I was not yet alive in 1971. I remember seeing the Nirvana thing (1992) on a tiny TV in my dorm room when I was 19. I actually remember thinking that it was an important and memorable thing that was happening. I don’t know if that’s true, but it seems like this iteration/performance is more timeless than a lot of the other bullshit that was happening in 1992…
Time compression: these two performances are separated by 20 years (more or less). And 20 years now separates us (in 2012) from the Nirvana performance.
Now extend both ends of the timeline another 20 years — 1951 to 2031.
How will a 19-year-old in 2031 (he’s that baby who was born today) look at the Nirvana video? How will he look at the James Gang video? And what is the equivalent thing from 1951? It’s probably Les Paul on the TV blowing minds with his electric guitar…
OK. More to come, maybe…
